Breaking News April 14, 2008 - Veolia Environmental Services By: Kelly Rooney, for the Daily Tribune On April 22, more than half a billion people throughout world will participate in Earth Day activities. At Veolia Environmental Services, we’re involved in Earth Day activities year-round. Earth Day is special to us. Tomorrow we will make presentations to 225 area school children, providing each with a seedling to take home and plant. But throughout the entire year we welcome schools and community groups to tour our landfill and learn more about the importance of recycling. In addition, our employees speak about recycling at schools and universities. We are also involved in several community organizations that focus on the environment, including Citizens for a Clean, Green Welcoming Community, a group that has grown out of the Community Progress Initiative. Veolia is proud to be part of this community. Our Wisconsin Rapids facilities employ 51 full-time people. In South Wood County, Veolia Environmental Services, Solid Waste Division provides solid waste and recycling collection services to more than 20,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers. We also partner with area businesses. For example, Veolia is working closely with Corenso to supply wastepaper for their new board machine. We have always supplied Corenso with the mixed paper and cardboard from our local facilities. If your wastepaper is picked up by a local Veolia truck, know that it ultimately ends up at Corenso. We view ourselves and Corenso as partners in the community and we are working hard to meet their needs through our existing and prospective customer bases. When you recycle, in addition to helping a local business like Corenso, you remove items from the landfill waste stream. This allows for longer lives at existing landfills and reduces the need to build additional facilities. Pledge to incorporate recycling into your daily routine. It is one of the easiest, yet most impactful actions you can take to benefit both your environment and local businesses. You can take another step by getting involved with Citizens for a Clean, Green & Welcoming Community. This group meets monthly and is made up of a broad representation of our community, including municipalities, local businesses, environmental experts, the League of Women Voters, and concerned citizens, among others. Our next meeting is Wednesday, May 7, at 4 p.m. in Hotel Mead’s Salon A. Everyone is welcome and invited to attend. Kelly Rooney is General Manager at Veolia Environmental Services and a member of Citizens for a Clean, Green & Welcoming Community. |
