April 30, 2007 - Vesper continues to celebrate as a community

By Ruth Cline, for the Daily Tribune

Celebrate Vesper Day on May 12 will be a grand affair for the Vesper area.

The Vesper Community Progress Initiative members sponsored Celebrate Vesper Day in 2005 and 2006. The events were held to raise money for the Vesper Area Fund.

The community members, in a grassroots effort, stepped up to the challenge and helped raise the Vesper Area Fund goal of $20,000. This fund has doubled due to the generous matching funds received from the Barker Mead Fund.

Something equally important happened during the two events. Vesper area businesses, organizations and residents have united in their efforts to work together and make their community grow.

In 2004, when the Vesper Community Progress Initiative was started, more than 75 people from the community attended a meeting to share their ideas for the future. Out of those ideas the Vesper Area "Vision Statement" formed: "Vesper is a safe, family-friendly community which celebrates small-town characteristics, a positive environment, and exciting community events. "Vesper is a heritage village with thriving businesses that celebrate a historic agricultural background. Offering unique outdoor recreational opportunities and successful community-based events. Vesper is a great place to live, play, work, and visit."

On May 12, the businesses, organizations and residents have been challenged to work together in support of Celebrate Vesper Day. This is the community's day to showcase the community. Some of the events being planned include:
• Community wide rummage sales
• Kick off for Vesper's farmers market, which runs Tuesdays, May through October. Set up free in Vesper Community Park. All vendors are welcome.
• Vesper Fire Department's "famous" brat fry
• Ice cream cones half price at Winch's Convenience Store
• Friends of the Library book sale at the library
• Breakfast items and rummage sale at St. James Parish
• Lester Public Library of Vesper first year anniversary celebration
• Vesper Community Progress Initiative "Thank You" reception at the library
• Vesper Recreation Park Clean-up Day by Youth Sports group
• Walking trails, tennis courts, picnic areas, playgrounds and gardens open

Anyone interested in having a rummage sale and being included on the map should call the library by Saturday, 569-4669, or e-mail vespl@tds.net. Maps will be available at the Lester Public Library of Vesper, Winch Oil and at sales around the area.

Celebrate Vesper Day is a country-style fun and relaxing day for the whole family. We look forward to seeing all of you May 12. For more information, call Ruth Cline, 569-4202, or e-mail stonegate@tznet.com.
