August 22, 2005 - Portal website needs support

By Chad Bormann, for Daily Tribune

Editor's note: The Daily Tribune will regularly run columns updating Community Progress Initiative activities in local communities. Joanne Harmon is a member of the Rome is More group.

According to a report commissioned earlier this year by the Community Foundation of South Wood County and the Heart of Wisconsin Business and Economic Alliance, more than 2,000 people have joined the Community Progress Initiative, and 465 jobs have been created since the program was launched last year. By this time next year, we hope to broaden involvement in the initiative and pass ownership of the program to community members. One of the projects currently under development and in need of public support is the creation of a community-based portal Web site.

What is a portal Web site? Broadly defined, a portal Web site offers a vast array of resources and services, such as links to other Web sites, community calendars, business-to-business services and an archive of content specifically tailored to the site's target audience. Such a Web site is currently under development. When completed, it will serve as a repository of information for those interested in visiting or relocating to the Wisconsin Rapids area and for those of us who already call central Wisconsin home.

During the next few months, The Community Progress Initiative's New-Economies Cluster will work on this initiative and as part of this process, we are soliciting feedback from the community on the look and feel of such a Web site. As a community member, what information do you envision such a Web site containing? What do you think it should look like? What should it be named? How could such a Web site work better to serve the needs of each area community? These are some of the questions we, as a cluster, will be working to address during the next few months.

If you have any ideas, questions or concerns that you would like to address, or if you would like to become involved in the portal Web site development process, please contact the Heart of Wisconsin Business and Economic Alliance for further information or plan to attend one of our upcoming meetings.

The New-Economies Cluster meets at 7 a.m. every third Tuesday in the conference room of the Heart of Wisconsin Business and Economic Alliance. The public is encouraged to attend.
